Ok boys I've reached a fork in the road. I mentioned on this forum somewhere about how you guys have pricked my interest in the 338-06. I recently bought a used stainless Ruger 30-06. I had my mind made up to turn it into a 338-06. However after reading some articles on the 35 Whelan chambering, I am now undecided.

Like most of you I have been buying guns, shooting guns, loading ammo since I was a kid. However outside of the 45-70 and 44mag I have almost no experience with anything bigger than 30 caliber. There isn't much need for any of the big thumpers in this part of the world and up until now I have never wandered more than a state or two away to hunt.

I want to put a light weight barrel on it and end up with something that I could carry all day long without making my arse pucker!

Let me know what you think! 338-06 0r 35 Whelan? Barrel length? Experiences on big bears etc.
