My quest to find a heavy caliber left hand bolt in my present budget range has been rather frustrating. One lower cost option fo me would be to buy a used Savage bolt and rebarrel it. My best buddy is a smith and I could sell the original barrel to help offset the cost. My question is: Does anyone on this forum shoot the bigger caliber in a savage action? Do they seem to hold up okay? I like savage lever rifles (99's) but really don't have much practical experience with their centerfire bolt's.
Or should I just keep saving up and get a Remington or Winchester bolt? I have a Winchester 1886 in 45/70, and a Remington 870 with a rifled slug barrel so I'm not totally unarmed. But a .338 bolt or similar would be nice to have around..
