Wildcat options
Posted by Virus on Apr 24 2006
Remington Sendero .300 Win Mag, 26” barrel weighing approximately 9.5 lbs.

The barrel is on its last legs, and with the prospect of re-barrelling; I’ve been giving a lot of thought to some wildcat options.

Ideally I’d like a calibre that is relatively flat shooting; functions well with a 22” barrel maximum 24” and is not “hard” on barrel life.

My thoughts revolve around the following:

.358 Norma Mag
9.3-300 Win Mag
.375-300 Win Mag (.375 Taylor / Epstein)
.375 Dakota

1) The .375 Dakota seems ideal, but after reading some of the posts on this site, magazine alteration & feeding issues have put me off.

Hence anything based on my existing .300 Win Mag cases requiring no magazine or Bolt face modifications.

2) The .358 Norma seems to offer the best as far as SD & BC go, hence flat shooting & good penetration on game. (250gr. – 300gr bullets)

But .358 bullet availability could be an issue as well as bullets that can handle Norma Mag velocities.

3) .375 has all the bullets available & can handle magnum velocity, but can a .375-300 Win Mag generate .375 H&H velocities from a 22” tube with 270gr – 300gr bullets.

How would recoil rate in the above cals in a 9 lbs rifle, keeping in mind that I can deal with the recoils (just) from the .300 Win Mag with 180gr bullets @ 3000fps & 200gr bullets @ 2800 fps.

Also, how would the H.S. Precision composite stock with Full-length aluminum bedding blocks stand up to these recoil levels?
