The bullet selection may be a little sparce for the 348, but they're out there.  Ballistics resemble the 358, of which I'm a devoted fan.  A rancher friend on Kodiak has a 71 in 348, and he's accounted for a lot of bears with it over the years.  As I recall he bought it new and has never felt the need to buy anything else for a saddle rifle in bear country.

I've got a really sweet 71 in 450 Alaskan.  I have to say that I enjoy it as much or more than any other rifle, simply because the action and the "feel" of it appeal to me.  I've got a 358 carbine in 358 (Savage 99) and I've handled a couple of BLR's.  In my book, they're a step down from the Model 71- not that there's anything wrong with the caliber or the guns.  They just don't feel as good in my hands.

I've tried to be objective, but obviously I can't.  Buy one of the 71's, if not both!
