mild 45-70
Posted by George on Feb 25 2006
Ronnie,
I shoot and load for all kinds of 45-70s, some modern some well over a hundred years old. I have found loading lead or cast bullets for accuracy is hit or miss and might take a LOT of experimentation. Given the type of hunting/shooting you're talking about I think accuracy is most of the ball game. And, the micro-groove barrel is particularly accurate with jacketed bullets. That, along with the need for putting together mild, low recoil, low pressure loads- you may try a different approach than cast or lead. One I'd try is mild loads with either the 350 grain jacketed or 400/405 grain jacketed bullet. There are some tested loads that will safely push those bullets at only 1000-1300 fps MV - very mild and designed to duplicate black powder ballistics for the older guns. Both IMR and Accurate Arms make powder specifically for those types of loads. The IMR powder is SR4759 (don't use IMR 4756!!!) the AA powder is 5744. Several load manuals list them and the Accurate Arms website has their's online. While 3031 is one of my favorite powders for the 45-70..., for this application, I think 4759 or 5744 would fit your needs much better. Besides the caution about using the wrong powder like IMR 4756... some of the listed loads for 4759 and 5744 are reduced so much that a double charge is possible. If you try it, after charging, visually check those cases. Anyway, just an idea for you. Good luck
