Ammunition is a weird science!
Posted by AlaskaCub on Feb 24 2006
Today I went out and shot my Weatherby Mark V .270 Win. I had tried to sell it in the past year but decided to pull it out of the case and shoot it last week and had forgotten how accurate this rifle is. Last week I shot a 7 shot group 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards with cheap remington 130 grain PSP's that you could cover with your thumb from the joint to the tip amazing! So I wholeheartedly decided I was going to use it this year for sheep hunting and at 6 1/2 lbs and shooting sub moa groups I dont even know why I wanted to sell it.
Back to the issue of Ammunition, I made a run up to Sportsmans and various other stores looking for the premium ammos available for this gun just assured that it would shoot the premium stuff better than it shot the cheap PSP's and I ended up buying some 130 Remington Scirocco's, Federal TBBC 's and just so I could play with it and not shoot up my $40 a box stuff I bought another box of Remington 130 grain PSP's for $17
I just got back from the range and the groups that I shot with the high dollar stuff were like 1 1/2" to 2 1/2". Got frustrated and pulled out the cheap remington PSP's and shot a 5 shot group inside 3/4 of an inch dead center 2.5 inches high at 100 yards. I guess the cheap PSP's its going to be for sheep. I have this gun sighted in so accurate with the cheap ammo that I was shooting spent 12 gauge shells( aiming just under the brass) stood up on the top of the upper 2x4 support for the targets and hit the 12 gauge shells once out of 4 shots with the sciroccos. I guess I just have to listen to my rifle after all I am shooting sheep not brown bear. I'll carry some 150 grainers in case I run into a bear in the low country and fill it with 130 grain PSP's when its time to hunt. Just weird how playing with different ammo works and sometimes better is not better!

Next: Amen to that! CowlitzSteelie Feb 24 2006
