If you decide to go ahead with the Marlin, I'd resist the temptation to make it a lightweight. My 71 is beefy, with a stout barrel and lots of surface area in the butt and little drop in the stock. I haven't weighed it, but I'm betting it tops 8 pounds.
With all that in place, it still really moves you when you touch off a heavy load. Not painful, mostly due to the ample surface area of the butt. Lots of rearward and upward movement, but not as fast as either of my 375s or 338. Porting would probably take care of some of the muzzle lift. As it is, it's kinda hard to keep your front foot on the ground with the relaxed shooting stance I habitually use.
I shot a friend's 450 made up recently on a new 71. It has a light ported barrel and trim stock with a butt considerably smaller than the one on mine. Weighs a lot less than mine too, probably not a whole lot over 6 pounds I'd bet. No, the muzzle doesn't rise a lot due to the porting, but it's downright painful to shoot from the bench. Better offhand, but you wouldn't believe it's the same caliber as mine. Mine's fun to shoot, but I noticed he doesn't bring his to the range much, now that the new has worn off.
