Sako Battue 338 rifle
Posted by Murphy on Jan 31 2006
Frank,
Welcome to the forum, you have a nice rifle there. Actually that rifle is too short, send it to me quickly and get a longer rifle.:-)
The Sako Battue is an interesting rifle, which comes from a European style of hunting not unlike eastern deer hunting in this country. The word Battue is French and means beaten (probably invented by a French soldier)or beater and is the term given to the hunters who drive deer and boar from the bushes toward hunters on stands. These "beaters" beat the bushes and scare out game and their shots will come quick at moving targets. They need a handy quick pointing rifle and that is the Battue. The short quarter rib and highly visable sights are not meant for long range shots but are great for close and quick. Sako has made three different barrel lengths in the Battue, 18.5", 20" and the last model is 19.25" (Scout length) and this last one comes with a factory installed third sling stud just forward of the floor plate hinge. My 308 is that configuration, my 9.3 is the 20 inch version. I've never seen a 338 Win Mag in a Battue nor have I seen it cataloged, doesn't mean they didn't make them, they didn't catalog the 9.3 either. I have however seen guns for sale that were called Battue but were just carbines or "handy rifles" as Sako calls them in some models. You might want to measure the barrel exactly and the Battue has a funny quarter rib with a shallow "V" rear notch.
Anyway on to your question. 338 win Mag will typically send a 250 grain at 2750 fps from a 24" barrel. I have two 338 Sako's, one with 24 3/8" and one with 22.5" and they are 40 fps difference with the same load, part of that difference is the tighter chamber of the 22.5" gun. All guns are different but I would say that your 338 if it is actually 18.5" barrel will be 2550-2600 fps with a 250 grain or about 150 fps less than a 24" barrel rifle. Your mileage may vary but that's a good guess. The 225 grain is 50-100 fps more. I wouldn't worry about the energy delivery with the 338 way more than enough for even big boar. As to accuracy that is up to you. With a good scope it is certainly a 300 yard gun. Most rifles seem to take on the character and ability of their owners. I like the 1-4 or 1.5-5 scopes in detachable mounts, of course. With the irons I don't feel in need inside say 150 yds. Good shootin'.
P.S. If you think the rifle is too short and want to sell it please let me know I can give it a good home.
