I have recently traded for a Sako Bautte 338 rifle.  I shoot lots of dear and have recently got into boar hunting to extend the hunting season.  I have found I love boar meat so I will continue.

How much velocity is lost from say a 22-24 inch barrel versus the 18.5 factory barrel this rifle has?  

Also, although  this rifle appears to be targeted for large game brush gun, and assuming average hunter skills are used to shoot it, what is the effective yardage for accuracy and energy?

I would like to use the gun, but I have the underlying sense the barrel maybe too short for an all around large game rifle.

I would appreciate anyone's input that can help me learn more about this.
