It's an interesting questing, and ones choice will be a compromise, based on what they feel is most important.  If I was choosing a single big game hunting rifle, I'd go with a 338 win mag.  But when you add in the other criteria, and I consider the need to have ammunition that is light enough to carry large quantities, and consider what military rounds are available, I'd go with a much lighter choice.

With patience and a head or spine shot, a 223 with a 55 gr solid will drop any animal on the spot.
