My Grandpa, 94 years young today in the Valley told of the 30-40 he bought for $10.00 with a box of shells and that was all he needed for years as each shot had to count as there was no $ for new shells.  Homesteading in the Mat valley in the 30's were tight days.  Grandma did not have enough $ for salt or flour so the gun had better be good enough as it was.  Grandpa said it was good enough then and still would be today.  My Uncle still has that old gun in his collection.
