Only One Rifle
Posted by Murphy on Jan 27 2006
George,

That's ridiculous! 700 NE!  A good 600 NE will work for 99% of all protection needs.  :-)

When I was about nine or ten years old I would walk down the road to an "old mans place" about a half mile away and sometimes help with chores there and he would pay me a few bucks to stack wood or feed his old cows and such.  I would hang around and listen to him talk about the olden days, always fascinated by his tales of hunting.  In the corner of his shop standing in the shadow of his work bench were three old guns. A Winchester '03 22lr, a Fox double 12 gauge and what I now know to be a pre war Winchester model 94 in 38-55 caliber.  He called that his "Barr gun" and told of how back home in Maine he had downed more than a couple with it.  Often I would get to shoot up a few excess rounds of 22 ammo but one day he asked if I wanted to shoot his "Barr gun".  Holy smokes! I rested that fine old rifle in the palm of my left hand as I leaned over the wood pile and poked a huge hole in the bottom of an old bucket all the way across the garden. Boy! What a day that was. Oh, what I would give to have that very rifle, today.  Many times I have thought about that old man and his rifle and that if it were good enough to keep the bears away and put meat on the table back then, surely it would work today.

There you have it, the only rifle a man needs, 38-55.  That's my pick.   Good shootin'.
