450 Ackley loads....
Posted by Murphy on Jan 25 2006
Plumber,
A nice butt kicker you have there. I owned an A-Square Rifle built on a P-17 action and loaded for it a bit. The tiny shoulder on this case is really a pretty good idea giving a consistant head space datum point. Brass lasts for many firings with very little stretching, It has a slight edge over the Lott in case capacity and thus performance but it is very slight.
I made brass from 416 Remington for my rifle by just necking up with a tapered expander in the die. This actually was a good fit in my chamber and I didn't need to headspace on the belt.
Brass with the correct head stamp is available from A-Square, in fact I think I still have some new brass from them. I traded the rifle some time ago.
All in A-Squre brass with Federal 215 primers,
Swift 450 gr A/F, IMR-4064 84.0 grs 2309 fps, 86.0 grs 2367 fps
Swift 450 gr A/F, RL-12 88.0 grs 2414 fps
Hornady 500 RNSP, H4895 82.0grs 2277 fps
Hornady 500 RNSP, H4895 85.0 grs 2383 fps
H4895 was best powder. Hornady bullets have changed jacket material and cannelure placement since then.
Use Hornady starting data for the 500 Swift.
The reformed 416 brass was tough but the neck was very thin. My barrel was 23". A-Square brass is good, strong brass and you'll want the correct headstamp if you take it over seas.
Good shootin'.
