416 family
Posted by AlaskaBob on Jan 25 2006
It all boils down to pressure within the cartridge to push the bullet.  Here the Rigby rules with the Remington second and the Robert Chatsworth-Taylor third.  But for efficiency the Taylor is tops.  Still 2300 for a 400 grainer is fine.  I'd chrono some new Remington factory loads.. velocities are supposed to be down since the 416 Remington was reported to have pressure spikes in Africa with the older loadings.  Pressure rules in the final anaysis.

As an aside my Lott is able to push a 450 grain TSX out at 2400 fps.  The banded solid hits 2450, out of the 25 inch barrel.  That is in the theoretical upper limits for the Lott.  The only reasons I went to Africa with that hot load were using the Hodgdon Extreme powder and carrying back up ammo with a lower pressure, just in case Africa undid my load workup.

The Taylor isn't a Rigby, but it will do fine anywhere in the world, at the appropriate ranges.
