Its amazenng how much smelly stuff gets said about real rifle cartridges. I have and use a Ruger M77mk 2 that Bill Fowler inAnchorage took from a 338 win and rebarreled to 458 win mag. for me in 1994 I think it was. I opted to keep the original canoe padle stock and somewhere between 2000-3000 rounds later I,m still glad I made that choice.. The key is to have a big peice of steel permantly mounted to the underside of the barrel and then bed that to one of the cross supports in the forend with J/B weld, I use wheel bearing grease as the release agent. When I had that rifle built I almost had it made up in 416 Taylor. But I already had one. An Eddystone Enfield.. It worked like a charm so I got the 458 as I wantedtoseeif I could detect any difference in the killing actuallity on brown bear. The 458 win will beat the speed of the 416 Taylor about 50 f.p.s. but on fast moveing and adrenelized close range bears,I could detect no difference in time of death. It has been my experience that when you hit them an the chest somewhere with a bullet that doesn,t desentergrate , the bear dies then falls down. 2 times I have done this where I could see the lights go completely out instantaniously, and when they hit the ground they were allloose and DEAD .. Velocities/ both my 416 Taylors didn,t like to push 400 gr bullets faster than 2300 fps. The original X bullets in 350 go 2450 the 325 likes 2525 fps and the 300,s never made it to 2700 fps. however both of them are absoulte killing machines and vcery easy to shoot accurately. My 1st one had a 19" barrel and my current one has a 18". So far the only powder for them is IMR 4320 and I use fed 215 primers. I also like the 400 gr Hornady bullet and now that it is an Interbond it is even better. I tried Andy Runyon,s thery of the thin jacketed Barnes Origanal spitzers and was very underwhelmed, but I did manage to about cut a deer in half with one,. It was gross. The X bullets and Horn,s and Speer bullets work Execently. And they don,t seem to blood shock the meat . They just make a hole all the way thru.. A little trick,, make up a plinking load also, they are FUN !! Previous: 416 Taylor GaryVA Jan 23 2006 Next: 416 Taylor, etc.... Murphy Jan 24 2006 Message Thread:
