barrel length and what five calibers to keep
Posted by AlaskaBob on Dec 17 2005
The RUMs now carry 26 inch barrels. I agree with Murphy on the ineffeciency angle.  The Brenneke case (9.3 x 64) fits a standard action.  It is the German twin of the 375 and is a real killer.  If it were not for the World Wars, the 375 H&H would never have gotten the best of the 9.3s.

The super slow powders take a lot of barrel to ignite fully.  Touch off a .223  and quickly grab the case.... and then grab for the burn ointment.  Touch off the big magnums and the really hot area is not the case but the mid to muzzle end of the barrel.

OK... if one had to choose which calibers to choose for a 5-gun battery to cover all hunting in the world... what would they be?
