Don't Tinker with da' Tikka
Posted by Murphy on Aug 18 2005
Dear Hunt4,

"I was just cleaning the gun and it went off."

You have de-cocked the bolt. I think you were cleaning a little too hard, but it is simple to fix. I de-cock and re-cock a few dozen a week now.  The new Sakos come with a snazzy little tool to allow easy cocking/decocking of the bolt for cleaning the inside, etc. I guess the Tikka does not.

If you want to fix it and learn more about your rifle, pay attention.

Hold the bolt in your right hand, thumb up and touching the base of the  bolt handle. The bolt handle is slightly to your left, with the cartridge end down.  You are looking at the top of the bolt with the bolt knob pointed at your face.  The sear notch or shelf is a flat ledge on the striker, to your left about even with the bolt handle.  Put that notch on the top corner of your bench, or table, or a nice piece of furniture (a flat surface). The bolt handle will be to the left and hanging over the edge of the bench. Pull down with the right hand against the spring tension of the main spring, while pushing the top of the bolt against the bench with the left hand to keep the sear notch against the bench top, and rotate the bolt handle and body (clockwise, looking from the bottom) by turning the right hand, until the striker rests in the full cock notch.

That's all there is to it.  Let me know how it goes, you'll be shootin' again real soon.
