[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] firelapping Posted by grizz106 on Jul 30 2005 Grizzinater, firelapping is a "controlled wear" bullet shooting process wherein a impregnated 320 grit 12BHN bullet is shot out at air gun velocities. This will groom the barrel to either the correct ID dimensions and or increase to the next size which in my case will be .459" From what I gather Marlin inadvertantly provides gun owners with barrels that have "bulges" caused either by the dovetail cut both front and rear or at the stampings. It is not "normal"--I had 3 diff. readings in my barrel, how I knew this was I slugged my bore in 3 locations. Aside the fact that previously I had fliers when shooting albeit targets or animals. Now with "controlled" wear I know am shooting more accurately than I did before. Now, it is a matter of importance of not shooting anymore than necessary of the "grit impregnated" bullets--how you determine that would be a accuracy test as I am doing. Very slow process and you must be deliberate in your effort or you will not gain anything if you over do it - you can not correct overwear.
