fat scopes
Posted by George on Jul 27 2005
bourbot,

Fat scopes always cause such problems. But, I'm sure there are mount/base systems out there high enough to clear the bolt. I guess I don't understand the manufacturer's reasoning behind making a rifle scope using the "reflector" type system- the "cat eye". It does allow for a smaller but much fatter package and has some advantages over the "refractor" system in that fewer pass-thru lenses are used and is the less expensive, most practical way to get max light with less distortion. That is the reason all the big astronomical telescopes use the reflector (cat eye) system. The "price" paid however in a rifle scope is exactly the problem you describe- too fat. Also, there is one other problem with fat scopes besides clearing the barrel and/or bolt. Very high mounts don't allow for good, solid settling of the cheek on the rifle comb.... which leads to much more difficulty in shooting consistently and accurately. Anyway, hope it all works out and good shooting.
