No experience with the Maverick, but I've been bashing a Mossberg 500 around Alaska for over 20 years.  It doesn't "seems" as solid as any of my other shotguns, but it has held up to incredible abuse.  In fact, that's why I bought it.  It spends a lot of time in and out of skiffs on saltwater, and sometimes has to go quite a while without serious cleaning.  Not much money, but reliable performance without a lot of TLC.  The bluing is completely gone and the stock is an eyesore, but it keeps on ticking.  I'm embarrassed for anyone to see it, except that it has earned all its bruises.

If you want a knock around gun that can take lots of abuse, I can recommend the 500 strongly.  It was cheap enough that it doesn't break my heart every time it gets another ding.
