I'm looking for an alternative to carrying my .338 for bear protection.

I was looking at shotguns yesterday, and noticed that Maverick Shotguns are selling dirt cheap.  Those are made by Mossberg, aren't they?  Any experiences: reliability, etc.  

I suppose the rule that you get what you pay for still applies,but  I'm just looking for something that will throw out a slug when I need it to and won't break my heart if it gets beat up a little.  Thanks!...Louis
