Kimber and Bear loads
Posted by Murphy on Jul 22 2005
rost495,

The 45 ACP can certainly be loaded to out run the bulldog.  Sierra makes a bullet designed for match shooters that has a flat point.  It's called a FPJ, full profile jacket.  They are very accurate and thick jacketed, tough bullets, designed to stay together when hitting steel targets and deliver energy to knock down steel bad guys. They are made in 185, 200 and 230 grain.  The flat nose is exposed lead, all the rest is jacketed and the jacket is folded at the nose for strength. The lead also has antimony and is harder than pure lead. The 230 gr can be loaded with 7.0gr of Vihta N350 and chronographs 930 fps from my 5" gov't model.  I just used the last of my 230 gr and heard Sierra stopped making that weight, I hope not but maybe you could find on dealer shelves. The Vihta manual shows 7.3 as max charge.  I have fired these bullets at high velocity from 45 Colt and 454, into sand and paper. They stay together very well and track much better than round nose bullets, which tend to veer off course. The hard cast bullets in SWC and WFN are not available that will feed reliably in the 45 ACP unless the gun is reworked.  But hard cast bullets will not deform at ACP velocities.  If you have found a hardcast designed to feed in 1911 models, such as the BT 225 FP, that would be the best choice and can be driven faster than jacketed with the load given. If you have found a flat point FMJ of 230 grain bullet, load that as above.  I wouldn't worry about lead squirting out the back.  Maybe when fired into rocks but not on bear bones at ACP velocities.  I hope this helps and good shootin'.
