scratch
Posted by BrownBear on Jul 20 2005
A lot will depend upon the type of finish.  If it's an epoxy type finish (the finished will usually look chipped around the scratch) layed over the wood, moisture under the finish can cause the finish to lift further and expose areas beyond the scratch if you don't deal with it.  If it's an oil-type finish that penetrates deeply into the wood, a good wiping with BC's Linspeed Oil should reseal the wood, even if it doesn't fill out the scratch.

I knew one gunsmith who was very good at dealing with deep scratches and epoxy finishes.  Basically he chipped the finish away from the scratch until he reached an area of good adherence.  Then he filled the scrape with epoxy finish and built it up to reach over the edge of the old finish.  Very careful sanding and buffing restored it to near like-new condition unless you looked close enough to spot the broken wood grain.  This was in the late 70's and early 80's, and he treated lots of Weatherby rifles.  It wasn't cheap, but the owners were happy with his work.
