Loading the Kimber.....
Posted by Murphy on Jul 15 2005
Jeff,

I agree the Kimber would be better.  If you have found a bowling pin bullet that would be best.  Oh yeah, handloading is the way to go, I guess we wasted a lot of key time with the factory loads.

I used to have a 240 gr WFN that I used to shoot bowling pins with in my old Colt C model 1911.  I slicked it up to feed them and with a modified Bar-Sto barrel it shot a few inches low in the belly when I aimed at the top.  It was a good set up.  Didn't set any new world records but I got them off the table.  I have also found that what works for pins works for critters.  Flat nosed bullets give straight line penetration, round nose (unless they expand/deform) will tend to deflect and yaw off course.   (Just as FMJ spitzers are unstable at impact, the hardball round is also to lesser degree, and courses it's way through a target in a curved route.)

It has been said; beware the man (woman) who owns but one gun, he (she) may know how to use it. Good thinkin' with the Kimber.

What propellant do you use for the 45 ACP with the IDPA ammo?  Have you ever used Vihta 3N37?  About 7.4grs with Sierra 200 gr FPJ, very clean, major level and good load.

Also, the fence is a good idea.  When several are in the camp, use of handguns for defense is more complicated and requires some planning and drills. Enjoy your trip and good shootin'.
