I don't think handguns should be carried for piece of mind.  I think they should only be carried if the person carrying it is very proficient in it's use, and is chambered for a round of reasonable power for the task at hand.  Pepper spray is good for piece of mind.

It is very sensible for all hunters to have rifles, or to at least have one backup rifle.  Things can and do go wrong in the bush, and it would be more than a slight inconvenience to find the one rifle inoperable or out of ammo thus ending your hunt.
