[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] The Triple Four Posted by BigTex on Jun 30 2005 Ok, first off I don't claim to know about bears or Alaskan game shot with a .444. I do however own one and have killed a thing or two with it. Murphy is right about the 240 gr. Remington load. Yes, it will kill something if you put a hole in it's lung with it. Getting it there is the problem. On a broad side shot on a deer I'm sure it will penatrate fine in most cases. What if it is quartering to you? Away from you? That bullet was desined for a pistol bullet. It is the same one loaded in a .44 Mag. In the right situation it will work fine but how many times do you have the "right" situation? The 265 Gr. Hornady factory load is much better. There bullet was desined for a rifle. My rifle will group them just over an inch at 100. Not bad for a lever gun. Last year I shot a 9 point buck with it. He was 77 yards from me quartering away. The bullet broke one rib, went through lung/lungs, broke the shoulder bone, and was lodged under the skin. Deer droped like a rock. The bullet shucked it's jacket and was found by the lead core. Simulur results on hogs. With that said, seldom do two animals act the same when shot. Even if shot in the same place with the same gun. This is not a bounded bullet so I don't think I would want to use it on larger thicker skined animals. I have never shot a Black Bear but it MIGHT be ok. Murphy or someone else on her will know better than me. I am sure it would do well on a Caribou but here is your problem. If you get much more than a 100 yards it drops like a rock. You cant kill 'em if you cant hit 'em. As far as cast bullets you need to look at the rifleing of your paticular gun. If it has 12 lands you have micro-groove rifleing. This is not suposed to stabalise lead bullets very well. I have a box of 235 gr. hard cast with a gas check. I an going to try one of these days (mine has micro-goove). I was told that with the gas check it will do better. This would be a better bullet for tough thick skinned animals. With that said I am sure if you shot a brown in the head with any of them he would have a bad day.
