Ducks
Posted by BrownBear on Jun 28 2005
You bet!

I do about 95% of my duck shooting with 3", and only feel the need to use 3 1/2" loads when I switch to geese.  I'd hang onto that 500 even after you accumulate more guns, simply because it's comparatively cheap, yet reliable.  I still have one I bought something like 20 years ago.  I use a Benelli Super Black Eagle for ducks and geese now, but the 500 still hangs around as a loaner and a spare.  I also switch to it when I'm going to be in a boat getting splashed with saltwater all day.

I also picked up a slug barrel for the 500 real cheap, and that's what I carry any time I want to carry a shotgun on a salmon river in the summer. I treat it like dirt, banging and clanging it in and out of planes and boats and across riverbank rocks, yet it keeps on ticking like a Timex.

Mine looks like hell because the bluing is long gone and the stock is scuffed from end to end, but it's still an important part of my gun array.  Yours will be too, and over time it will become a sentimental favorite, even if your grandkids never understand its value as an heirloom.
