It's a very useful gun within its range limits. Lotsa power, fast handling, and really accurate in most guns. I'd hold my shots to 150 yards or less, but that describes a whole lot of the hunting up here with the possible exception of caribou in open country. Get with a moose in the bottomlands and brushy hillsides, and you will love it. I usually use 265 or 300 grain bullets for larger animals, but have had excellent performance on deer with the 240's.
With anything less than 300 grains it wouldn't be my first choice for hunting brown bear, but I have no qualms about carrying it for bear defense.

The difference is that in hunting you are never going to shoot brown bear in the skull simply because it would spoil the skull for measuring. But for brain shots in a defensive situation it would be great. For actual hunting, shooting a bear in other parts of the body, I want a little more sectional density and energy than is available in .429 diameter bullets, in order to allow better penetration into the vitals on angling shots. The penetration problem gets even worse after you spend your $1000 for a 50 caliber conversion, simply because heavy 50 cal bullets long enough to have greater sectional density are too long to seat within the overall length restrictions of the action while still allowing sufficient powder for higher velocities.
In truth, I would leave the 444 in original form for sentiment and very good service for most hunts. Spend your $1000 instead on a 338 or 375 if you plan to hunt brown bears.
