Ok another question before i leave on the .500 S&W
Posted by jssbastiat on Jun 28 2005
Ok, i've looked at the .454, .480 and .500....all have good power...good makers...wide selection of ammo...

but, i don't like the 7.5 inch barrells...i would like something shorter like the 4 in .500 S&W....So just for close protection from a bear, will giving up the inches hurt me that much on knock down power...

from everything here i have been looking at on the stats between these three weapons....it looks like that i will be giving up some FPS if i go wtih the 4 in .500, but, that the energy and weight of the bullet are so much more than either the .454 or the .480, that it is the best choice since is it lighter and easier to get aroudn adn out of a holster????

I know i've seen this debate on other posts...BUT, i'm down to my last week here in texas and gotta make some big $$$$ decisions....so, any help, idea's, suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I can get the .454 ruger for $750...$940 for the 4 in .500...$1000 for the 7.5 in barrell..

the gun dealer here said that the FPS on the .454 adn teh .500 were about the same, BUT, that the energy from the .500 was 600 foot lbs more than the .454..and that this energy/fps would be pushing 100 more grains of lead than the .454????  does this sound like a good trade off for close in protection?????
