Mags
Posted by BrownBear on Jun 27 2005
They've got an awful lot of experience examining and tagging bear hides, working with guides, examining moose taken in special hunts, and more.  That lest them see a whole lot of bullet holes and hear a lot of first hand accounts of hunts after the clients have left.  Not the same glory stories the sports go home and tell, but the version from experienced witnesses and wound channels.

Based upon that, the ones I know have somehow got the impression that most big bore magnum shooters couldn't shoot themselves in the foot if they shoved the muzzle inside their boot.  Too many hunters, especially those on their first hunt for something big, buy a big magnum just for the trip and don't take the time to do more than scare themselves with recoil and develop a flinch.  Add in a little buck fever, and their shooting gets even worse.

My long-time hunting partner is one of these folks "in the know" about the shooting abilities of average hunters with brand new large bore magnums.  He says he'd much rather see a hunter show up with the '06 he's shot deer for the last twenty years than with a new magnum he's run a box or two of shells through.  He'll shoot better and kill with fewer shots with the '06 than he is likely to manage with a gun that he's secretly afraid of.

The truth hurts, but lotsa glory stories are nothing more than bar talk to hide embarassment.
