There was a guy from Valdez, I believe, and who was bow-hunting bears in the Copper Valley a few years ago. To make the story short, I will bypass the details and get into the action: The bear was on top of him chewing his scalp off, but somehow he managed to pull his .44 magnum from the holster and shoot the big bear one time through the neck. The bullet blew a hole through one of the bear's arteries on the neck, and it died almost on top of him. He rolled his way out, and walked several miles to safety, bleeding profusely, but lived to tell the story.

I hunt with a .338WM rifle, but carry a .454 Casull in a bandoleer holster whenever I go to "the nature outhouse." It also sleeps with me in my tent. I hope I will never have to use it in self defense at close range, but it makes me feel better than carrying a pocket knife or a sling shot.
