I like to think of a bear brain as something about the size of a grapefruit.  They make good handy targets, even if they cost more in Alaska than the ammo you are shooting at them.

The range at which you can hit a grapefruit double action with your defensive load is the range at which a handgun is going to be a reliable stopper.  Period.  No excuses or hopes, just drop them in their tracks and be done with it.

Hey, I'm making it easy on you:  The grapefruit isn't coming at your knees faster than a horse!  

You want to make the practice realistic, put the grapefruit in plastic grocery sack and tie that to a long rope suspended from the high limb of a tree.  Swing the grapefruit hard away from you, then start shooting at about shoulder level as it swings back toward you.  Better yet, dispense with the grapefruit and sack, then tie a water balloon to the rope.  They don't hurt as bad when they hit you on the backswing.  You need practice cleaning that pistol after an Alaskan rainstorm anyway.
