My favorite would be a .454 Casull with 260 to 300-grain bullets. Hard-cast bullets msy be better, or at least bullets that are tough. For bear defense, I  imagine you are talking about "very close range" shooting?

The next caliber down the line would be the .44 Magnum. Again, use hard-cast bullets, or ones that are designed tough.
