I can pick up a rifle after having not shot one for a year and have little trouble shooting at the rifles potential. I can seldom due that after a months time with a pistol, and if I don't shoot during the winter, I'm really off. I'd say I shoot alot more than the average guy, and keep an eye on how well or poorly folks shoot at the range. The regulars can do some amazing things with a handgun, the guy that shows up once a year is in no position to trust his life on his shooting. Unless one practices regularly with a pistol, they simply won't be able to place the shot needed in a defensive situation.
