Rifle
Posted by test1328 on May 10 2005
Murphy,

Thanks for the additional input into the rifle.  I'm a big fan of the Winchester Model 70.  I own three of them and have hunted almost exclusively with them over the last 15 years and am therefore very comfortable with that rifle in almost any circumstance that I've been faced with.  Therefore, when comptemplating a dangerous game rifle, I naturally thought of the Model 70 as the ideal rifle for me.  The rifle I've been looking at is the Model 70 Safari Express, I believe that's what they call it.  It's available in the 375 H&H, 416 Rem, and the 458 Win. Mag.  They may actually be chambering it for the 458 Lott now, too.  Do you have any experience or knowledge of how the Model 70 performs in the heavier cartridges such as the 416?  Not that I'm worried too much about weight, but the Ruger seemed a bit heavier than the Winchester.  I'm not certain of that, though.  It could be that the Winchester just felt better to me than the others.  I've also looked at the CZ Safari, which I liked, but that one seemed really heavy.  Maybe I shouldn't be too concerned about the weight, given the heavy recoil of the 416, but I figure I'll be carrying the rifle a whole lot more than I'll actually be shooting it.  For the money, the Ruger, Winchester, and CZ seem to be the best buys.  Every once in a while I see a Sako offered in 416 Rigby, but those are few and far between as well as a little pricy.  I've seen one Remington 700 with the Kevlar stock in the 416 Rem, but the one I saw was really light weight and that concerned me more than anything.  Thanks again for your input and I'm looking forward to any additional comments you may have on this.
