.375 H&H vs. 416 Rem
Posted by test1328 on May 09 2005
I am debating the purchase of either a 375 H&H or a 416 Rem. Mag for use in both Alaska for the big bears and possibly for Africa.  I've read plenty and looked at the ballistics, but was wondering if anyone here has any experience with both.  I realize that both will do the job on big browns and that you don't really need anything that large, especially since I took my last Brown with a 338 Win Mag.  However, I just want a bigger bore rifle.  My only real concern and the only possible valid one that I've read is the increased recoil of the 416 vs the 375 and the possibility that you won't be able to shoot as accurately with the 416 as the 375 due to the recoil.  I've shot a 375 before, but never a 416, but the recoil of the 375 didn't really bother me.  Obviously, neither of these cartridges are ones that you'd be spending a lot of bench time with.  Does anyone know what the actual recoil would be for the 375 with a 300gr. bullet versus the 416 with a 400gr. bullet?  The 416 has the most appeal for me, since I already own a 338 and the 375 (at least in my way of thinking) isn't a whole lot different, so I'm leaning that way, but I don't want to end up with something that I'm afraid to shoot either.  If it was any other cartridge, I wouldn't worry about it much, since I would figure I could always sell the rifle if I didn't like it.  But selling a rifle chambered for the 416 might be a little tougher than one chambered for something else.  If it makes any difference to your comments, I intend to scope the rifle, no matter the chambering.  Also, I dislike (very much) muzzle brakes, so I really don't want to add that to this rifle.  I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on this if you've got an informed opinion.  Thanks.
