500S&W Bullets
Posted by Murphy on May 05 2005
Ennis,

It is my opinion that little penetration is gained by exceeding about 1400 fps (impact velocity) with hard cast LBT style bullets. Or any other cast bullet.
Higher velocity, and this depends on some factors, can cause deformation of the nose of the bullet at impact which will cause the bullet to yaw (go off course) and/or penetrate less.  I would go heavier, 400 or so, to increase the sectional density which gives better penetration and not try to get the highest possible velocity. If you can send 400+ grains at 1500 you can shoot through any beast and that is all you can hope for.  A hand gun kills with penetration, all the way through the vitals and out the other side.  It will be a 50 caliber hole, expansion is not necessary nor is it expected.
Allen is right, it will come out the far side. I shoot Cast Performance and Bear Tooth Bullets.  The WFN is the widest meplat and will produce the largest wound channel. The LFN may be a little more accurate at longer range and have the best BC.  The WLN is probably the best compromise in meplat size, ballistic shape and accuracy. I shoot 355 grain WLNGC at 1450 fps from my 5&1/2" 454 and it will shoot through two railroad ties! With my express sights I can keep shots in four inches at fifty.(express sights are not real crisp) I think this works for me. Do you chronograph the big 50? What barrel length is you gun? I have not tried the 500 S&W but I have shot the 500 LB and it was a lot of gun. No brake! Very stimulating! Hope this helps and good shootin'.

Murphy
