Federal "Fussion" (first box a winner!)
Posted by Brian Richardson on Apr 29 2005
Mirage and irregular breeze –

Trying the new .308 WIN 180 grain Federal “Fusion”

Brought the ol’ Remington 788 along to ring out the new load from Federal that uses a fusion core process…  I also had loadings from Federal “less expensive” Power Shock w/ 180 grain Speer Grand Slam and Premium 165 grain Sierra GameKing.

The 788 .308 is topped w/ a Vari-X II c 3-9x

Representative groups from this gun off the bench w/ regular Remington Core-Lokt run 5/8” @ 100.  It is a good shooter & I like it w/ the exceptions of it not being as robust as some guns, and the fact that it is not stainless for Alaska conditions.

So far .19” three shot group looks like the winner for the day on Federal “Fusion”

.567” on the Game Kings

1.067” 10 shot group w/ Fusion

1.1295” 10 shot w/ GameKings

Power shock was not too good (by comparison) at slightly over an inch w/ 3 and 1.5”  5 shot groups… it was breezy and possibly just had some troubles w/ the winds.

.882” on a Ruger top tang safety .243 WIN using Hornady 58 grain MC Ballistic tip V-MAX while I let the 08 cool.

Sorry to say Worst ammo of the day was .243 WIN Remington 100 grain PSP Core-Lokt Ultra --- gotta go try again w/ that stuff???

All loads pretty much stay on a 4” bull’s-eye w/ the exception of the 100 grain .243…  So all but the 100 grainers would make precise hits on big game w/ out re-sighting in.
