Different loads for different species
Posted by test1328 on Apr 22 2005
I have also done as you've mentioned, loaded 150gr bullets in the 30-06 for antelope and then 180 gr. for elk, for instance.  I've also done it for the 338 WM.  However, it can be a pain if you don't have the time to develop a suitable load for each animal and if you don't have much time between seasons.  As for antelope and elk, I had about a month between the respective seasons, so could get out and re-sight my rifle for the new load.  While it can be done, there is certainly nothing wrong with and maybe even advantages to using only one load for all animals.  I'm sure that the 180 gr. load would have taken my antelope without any problems, I just would not have had quite as flat a trajectory.  But, then again, if you're only using a single load, you should have the trajectory pretty well memorized and making longer shots shouldn't be a big issue.

Personally, I have never had occasion to use a bullet larger than 180 grains in the 30-06, so I can't give you any input on using a 220 grain bullet.

Good luck,
test
