Cast loads for 450 Marlin
Posted by Murphy on Apr 17 2005
Magnum,

I don't know if you know this but to shoot cast bullets in the Marlins, all calibers, you need to do a couple things first. I don't know about the bullets you tried, how hard, what size, etc, but some rules apply.  A little more work but worth the effort. First, a new rifle barrel must be broken in and smoothed up to shoot cast bullets well. The best way to do this is order firelapping kit from Bear Tooth Bullets.(www.beartoothbullets.com).  Talk to Marshall Stanton there and he can get you going.  Also bullets need to be sized to fit the barrel of your Marlin.  My 45-70 barrel slugged .4592" and I order 459" bullets.  Marshall can tell you how to do that also. Firelapping involves firing bullets with a mild abrasive grease on them to smooth the barrel.  Once you do this, the accuracy of cast and jacketed bullets will be better. The barrel must be clean and free of lead or copper fouling, then firelapand clean, then slug (push a soft lead sinker down the barrel) and measure with a micrometer, then order bullets closest to that size. You will realize a new world of accuracy and overall performance from the Marlin. The 450 will perform better with cast bullets than with jacketed.  I know this is more work but I believe it's worth it.
I do this proceedure for all my hand guns and rifles in which I plan to shoot cast bullets,  I know it works. When you load don't try to get the highest velocity. The best accuracy will likely be about 1600-1800 fps and if you get a 425 grainer to that velocity it will come out the other side of about anything you care to shoot.
Good luck and enjoy the Marlin.  Good shootin'.
