Barnes around the World
Posted by Murphy on Apr 17 2005
Ed,

I must say you have an impressive photo album there.  I'm a little envious never having hunted "Down Under". And you have good reason to believe in the X-Bullets. I have not been so fortunate with them. Most animals were with the 375, I guess? Did I see an old FN Browning in the pics?
What I have observed with the Barnes X bullets on occasion is total failure to expand. A good Kudu taken by a friend of mine, was shot twice at 250+ yards, with a 300 WM and 200 gr X. Both bullets entered at left side shoulder and were found in left rear quarter (thigh) and curved (bent) like the rocker on a rocking chair, a quartering to shot. That's the only two I have seen like that but have heard of two others. I have recovered three of the six X bullets I have shot into animals and only one was fully expanded and packed with tissue as they are supposed to be. The three I did not recover did a fantastic job on the animals (Elk, Mule Deer, Prong Horn from 308 Norma Mag). One shot away from the Biltong, so to speak. The other two were 1)found partially expanded in the right shoulder muscle having passed through from left to right quartering away, from paunch through vitals ( this was second shot and the stopper) and 2) mostly destroyed on the shoulder bone, which was shattered, but did not penetrate and was found up under the hide having passed under the shoulder blade and did not enter the chest cavity. Both were in the same Eland from a 338 WM and 225 gr Barnes-X. I have been given many bullets that were recovered from animals taken of various size an keep a pretty good log of the range, animal, angle, caliber, bullet, etc. Some are hear say as I listen to the story, but some I observe and I take good notes. Many were my hand loaded ammo for others and the shooters would give feed back, and expended bullets.  I got much better feed back from the users of Swift A-frame than from Barnes X-bullets. This is an interesting discussion, I look forward to more.  Good shootin'.
