45-70 and Cape Buffalo
Posted by Murphy on Apr 17 2005
Magnum,

Oh yeah!  The PH's will snicker when you take out the lever gun but if you show them you can shoot it at the sight in, you can use it for anything you want. Vince Lupo took all six of the dangerous game of Africa with his 45-70 Marlin. This would include Cape Buffalo, Hippo, Lion, Elephant, and Leopard. Since the "Water Horse" kills more than any African animal he is included in the dangerous six. I think Vince was successful in his quest for all six. He used the Garrett 540 grain hard cast Hammerhead round at 1550 fps for Buff and Hippo. Garrett also loads a 420 grain at 1850 fps which would be better for the cats. Your 450 Marlin is the ballistic equivalent of the hottest loads for the 45-70 and Buffalo Bore loads a 430 grain LFN GC to 1900 fps. I think that's the heaviest bullet you can use in the 450 due to feeding characteristics and overall length. If you want a good old honest American opinion,  I think the 45-70 gives up nothing to the favorite African big bore, the 470 NE. 500 grains at 1900 fps will not penetrate as well as the 540 grain 45-70 of Garrett's.  I would not hesitate to face man or beast with that round chambered in a reliable rifle. Good shootin'.
