45-70 & 430 gr cast loads
Posted by Murphy on Apr 16 2005
plentycoupe,

I did find a load for a 430 gr hardcast and several with 420 gr and 450 gr..

430 grain WLNGC;  W-W Cases; CCI-200; Reloader 7, 48.0 gr,
1773 fps,  50.0 gr, 1847 fps and 50 gr, 1905 fps. Any are safe in my 1895 Marlin and velocity is from the 22" barrel.  In my testing and experience the hard cast, flat nose, large meplat, 45-70 loads penetrate the best with impact velocity of 1400 to 1800 fps. Higher velocity will tend to rivet (damage the frontal area of the bullet) and limit penetration.  I would limit any load to 1800 fps from the 18" guide gun and keep bullet weight at 400 gr or above. You have the right weight and 50 gr of RE-7 will be the load. Nothing is gained in killing power by adding velocity above 1800 fps, only more recoil. I'm not sure what the design is of your 430 gr but some won't feed well in the Marlin and all must be crimped very heavy. You should start at 46.0 grs of the RE-7.Good luck and good shootin'.
