375 for Mbogo
Posted by Murphy on Apr 16 2005
Magnum Man,

The old Dagga Boys are a tough bunch for sure. If you go to Zimbabwe the PH may not enforce the 375 minimum rule but will in Tanzania and Botswana.  In any case, the 375 is minimum for any one with any common sense. I think if I were to use the 375 I would load it with 300 grain Dead Tough bullets from A-Square, (A-Square Company, 205 Fairview Ave.,Jeffersonville, IN 47130, 812-283-0577)they are the best bullet for big Buffalo. Maybe even make the two in the bottom of the magazine solids. A-Square also sells a good solid. The theory is that a good first shot calls for a tough soft point and second and third shots will be at him coming in or going away and require better penetration. The 416's are the best medicine for Mbogo but are really tough to learn to shoot well. A whole new level of recoil. My 416 is an AV SAKO in 416 Remington and will accompany me to Tanzania when I get there, but the Rigby, Dakota and Taylor are about the same ballistics.  400 grains at 2400 is about 5000 pounds of energy. The 416 and Cape Buffalo are very closely matched. I'm not sure if I'm crazy enough to try the 454, if things go wrong I don't want the PH to shoot my Buff. I will need to get his OK I guess. It would be a fun hunt though! Good luck with your hunt and good shootin'.
