6.8 SPC
Posted by Murphy on Mar 29 2005
Diablo,
Funny question to ask about on this forum!? The 6.8 SPC, Special Purpose Cartridge began life with an R&D grant to Remington Arms back about the year 2000. The present day configuration is based on the old 30 Remington cartridge, an obsolete round for their old auto-loader model 8. Then this case was necked down to .277 caliber, yes that's 270 Win diameter, but no way close to it's performance, and given a bullet of 115-120 grains. Bullet diameter .277, bullet weight
115 grains, velocity 2650 fps, muzzle energy 1715 ft.lb. All this from a 16.5" barrel. This project came about to fill a need for a round with more power in a short barrel auto rifle. The 5.56x45,
m-16 round suffers in a short barreled rifle and needs more horse power(there is no such thing as knock down power in this caliber range). The XM-8, an H&K made, full auto shorty rifle, has been in use on a trial basis for about two years in some parts of the world. (guess where) Presently, Barrett, Stoner, Armalite and others, all make rifles for this caliber. I'm not aware of any rifle that Reming-ton makes in this caliber. They are available and lots of fun but not much for a hunting caliber. It is about on a par with the AK round, 7.62x39, ballistically. I have used the 30 Rem case in a T-C contender barrel and necked it to 6.5, 264. It would launch a 129 grain bullet to about 2400 fps and was about right for small whitetail deer and antelope up close, but that's about it. This has been interesting, thanks for the space and good shootin'.
