Bullets for George
Posted by Murphy on Mar 22 2005
George,

I am just catchin' up and read your post on the BT bullets of a couple weeks ago.  You're absolutely right.  The BT is a plastic tip version of the old solid base. Good bullets but for moderate velocities.  The BT with the poly tip is a little more 'explosive'. Velocity matters, the higher the velocity at impact the stronger the bullet must be.  Yes it does work well at modest impact velocities on deer size stuff but at whiz banger speed it can be less than desirable. Your right again of course.  I didn't explain myself well. If a hunter wants to hunt with just one caliber and one bullet/load combination, he needs to understand how all the factors that come into play. Big heavy bones and lightly constructed bullets at high impact velocity is all a bad combination. Since we don't always know the impact velocity or which bones we may hit, I prefer to err on the side of caution and use stronger, heavier bullets at moderate velocity. I have proven, to my self at least, that is the best combination.  When we buy a new rifle sometimes we don't take everything into account. I tell everyone who asks, heavier bullets, stronger bullets (partitions for instance)and forget high velocity.  Then someone comes along who claims to have taken a giant eland with a 24 caliber whiz-banger and everyone has to have one!  Oh, well, what can we do?
You know, I was thinkin' the other day and I think we should designate someone to buy a good rifle in the 325 WSM and test it out thoroughly on several animals and get back to the forum with the results.  Whom do you think would be a good candidate?  What do you think of this? Hmmmm.  Good shootin'.
