375-06 something
Posted by Murphy on Mar 15 2005
grizz,

I thought you might be in Wyoming since you mentioned Fred at Z-hat, he does the Hawk cartridges.  The Ruger can be rebarreled to 338-06 or 35 Whelen or 375-06 (Whelen). There are 4 other versions of the 375-06.  Three of them involve moving the shoulder, a more involved operation. The 375-06 Ackley 40 degree shoulder, is simplier to make but might not work so well in the Ruger if it is controlled round feed. If it is a push feeder it will be ok but you will probably loose a round in the magazine.  The making of ammo is just like necking up the 338 to 375. One pass, if you use a tapered expander button. Any of these can be fired in the Ackley Improved chamber, if correct bullet diameter, and will then fireform to fit. The 338-06 will send 210 gr bullets at 2750, and 225 gr at 2700, the Ackley will give about 50 fps more. The 35 Whelen will go 225 gr at 2650 and 250 gr at 2500, the Ackley will add about 50 fps. the 375-06, or Whelen if you will, (he never had any thing to do with it) will send 235 gr at 2650 and 250 gr at 2550, the 375 really runs out of powder room. The Ackley version is closer to 100 fps more for this weight range.
For what you want the 250 grain 375 at 2600 will do everything you need. You will notice a difference in killing power with the 338 or 35 or 375 over the 30-06.
You have two post here that are the same I replied to both, I don't think you read both. I have many loads for all of these and they are effective on the tough stuff. Good shootin'.
