375 Whelen
Posted by Murphy on Mar 14 2005
grizz106,

You know, to re-barrel the old '06 to the 35 or 375 Whelen would be simplier and would not come with the list of problems associated with the 375 Hawk.  The Hawk does not have better ballistics nor does Dave Scovill's or my version. Just neck up the '06 case  (two steps is best) and load it. 250 gr bullets can be driven to 2450+ in 22" of barrel and brass will last for ever. A good set of Redding dies will cost about 50 bucks and brass can be found any where. I have made, loaded and fired all the 30-06 wildcats, necked up or down and the improved versions are not generally worth the extra work and expense.  Also consider the original 35 Whelen, now has factory ammo available and loading as before is very easy. In all honesty I'm thinking that if you had to ask, you probably haven't made any of these before, and it may be more work than you anticipated. You mentioned some one with a Hawk/Scovill, (you must be in Wyoming) with a lever gun. This would have to be an 1895 Win.
Originally chambered for some big stuff, including the 30-06. Your old Ruger will work just fine for any '06 neck up and feed very well.
The 35 or 375 is a step up in horse power, for sure, but you might also consider the 338-06, certainly a favorite of mine. Hope this helps and good shootin'.
