Floating
Posted by Bigmnt on Feb 25 2005
If you have the winchester composite stock on you M70, the underside of the barrel channel is hallowed out and cases the forearm to be very flimsy. NOT GOOD!  Most factory bedding jobs are poor at best and only put a dob of glue on the front lug. My first recomendation would be to do a full actoin bedding using Brownells green past, (not the red box but the green.) Shoot the gun and see how it shoots.  With the Wichester composit stalk it will not take much sanding to float the barrel.

However, on two of my .338's I have found that the guns shoot remarkably better with a full barrel and actoin bedding.  Most of the old pre 64 winchesters shot better with 8 to 10 lbs of forend pressure.  Thats why you see the raised area in the forend of the stock on those older M70's

Do not be afraid to do your own bedding job, just make sure you coat the contact areas of the action and barrel with release and grease your lug screws.  I would be happy to help you if you post your email address.  Please do not shim the lug with a credit card...

My two cents...
