leupold scopes
Posted by Murphy on Feb 23 2005
Burton,

Leupold, great stuff. The recently remodeled vari-XII now has click adjustments and better coating than before. A 3-9X40 or 2-7X33
would be good. However one of my favorites is the vari-XIII 1.75-6x32. Top of the line and very small, no big bugle size objective lense to hang on everything and can be mounted very low so you don't have to stretch your neck to find the cross hair. This scope has a long tube for long actions (338 size) and will mount without a problem. The 2.5-8X36 is also a great scope but will will not fit a long action Ruger as it has a shorter tube. In the case with the Ruger, the rings can only be in one place so you will need a long scope such as 1.5-5 (no front bell), 1.75-6, 3-9, 3.5-10 etc. The first two are $400 each, delivered, the 3-9 is about $300 and 3-10X40 is $450, all are matte models. That's cheaper than Sportsmans warehouse. I have 1.75-6's on my 338WM and my 338-06Ackley. Ihave a 1.5-5 on two of my 375's, good setup. As good as it get in optics under $600. It's hard to justify paying more for scope than rifle but a cheap scope can render a rifle useless when you need it most. There are other good scopes out there but it is pretty hard to beat the value and warrantee of Leupold. Hope this helps, good shootin'.
